Every time I share a picture with this in the background, people ask me about it. So I figured it deserved a post all it's own.
This is our family constitution. We've had it for about 2 years now. We got the idea when my oldest twins were in pre-k. They came home one day and told me all about how their class did a class constitution, and wanted to know if we could do the same. I thought it was a great idea.
Our family constitution has 12 rules, and I think all but one or two of these came directly from the kids. We sat down at the table with a notepad and they told me their ideas. I think kids are so much more invested in the rules when they have a role in creating them. I combined and adjusted them a little so that each one was a separate rule, and then wrote it up on a big piece of paper. Each child signed it. The little ones were not yet 3, so their signatures are little scribbles in their favorite color. And of course my boy, who doesn't like the idea of rules, had to first draw a frown next to his name.
It hangs right on the wall in our dining room, next to our calendars, where we see it every day during meals. Of course they don't always follow all the rules, they are normal kids anyway, but it's a great reminder and conversation piece for whenever we need a little grounding.
